Slap Shot (1977)

Though it's popularity has been hindered by the fact it's based around a hockey team, this movie is about hockey in the same way Fight Club is about punching. It's original, dirty, funny, depressing, remarkably authentic, and features a wonderful turn from Paul Newman.

  1. ross Yes, I have a two part question: (1) Why do you say its popularity has been hindered by being about a hockey team? And (2) how can you divorce the hockey part from the movie itself to make such an assessment?

  2. jordan Nice try, everyone gets one question, you know that. I think anytime you release a sports movie in North America that isn't about baseball, boxing or american football, it's popularity will be limited. This has found great critical success in recent years, but it's still a movie most people haven't seen (especially most non-Canadians). If this movie had been about a baseball team they'd be building monuments in its honour. Or honor, I suppose.
