I'm morally obligated to tell everyone to see this movie, even though as far as docs go, its weak. The content get 100, the film making gets a 20, for an average of 60. They really dumb it down here - Veganism for the simpleton.
smittyvegan ... huh ... now dirty, if you were driving in a car made of meat, and got into an accident, and the airbag was made of prosciutto, and you were stuck inside and had to eat your way out ... what would you do then, mr. high-and-mighty?
January 19, 2013
dirtyI'd muster up all the animal love I could and I'd shine rainbows right outta that meat car!

Nougat_JesusBy definition, if you are vegan you are a simpleton. You may genuflect.
March 2, 2013
dirtyMy "genuflection" is that you can suck my tofu-tastin' balls! Also - your use of the word genuflect is strange at the very least, but most likely just indicates that you don't know what it means. Either way, the irony that you ask people to "genuflect" as you call vegans simpletons should not be lost on anyone.

Nougat_JesusQ: "How many Vegans does it take to change a lightbulb?"
A: "Hundreds, because vegans are really stupid!"
Being Vegan is a moral choice, on that, I would agree. Yet, for some reason, vegans push woo with a zeal only equal to the most devout and tend to demonstrate a complete lack of scientific understanding.
So why are you a vegan?
March 2, 2013
dirtyOkay - so with respect (for real), is your issue that an argument for a vegan diet is not based in scientific fact? Or just the zeal and devoutness with which they argue it?
Regardless of the knowledge most vegans demonstrate, is there a lack of scientific evidence that a plant-based diet is healthier than one that includes animal products, or that a western diet inflicts significantly more environmental damage than that of a vegan diet?
March 2, 2013
Nougat_Jesusdirty - so many questions directed my way...
All I asked is: "why are you a vegan?"
If you want to talk about this documentary, my issues are with distorting the truth and turning it into a polemic for going vegan. And please don't talk about the "China Study" - vegans have basically done what two hillbillies did to Ned in Deliverance with it.....
March 2, 2013
dirtyWell, this doc is pretty shitty, for sure. Overly sensational.
And I watched it through the prism of a vegan, but which distorted facts did you take issue with.
And supporting a vegan diet will certainly be hard if you don't want me to reference science, or evidence, so I'm not sure on what grounds to continue.
March 2, 2013
dirtyAnd I'm a vegan for much the same reasons as anyone else is. I don't like the way we treat animals, I think raising animals to sustains us is environmentally unsustainable, and I think a plant based diet is much healthier than an animal based one.
March 2, 2013
Nougat_JesusSo to recap your position:
- You don't like how animals are treated
- You think that raising animals is not environmentally sustainable
- And you think that plant based is healthier than animal based
So your reason for being vegan would be moral and choice based.
There is something to be said for better standards at slaughterhouses, but that is not a reason for not eating meat.
The world population and the consequences are a bigger concern to me than what we eat.
Humans are omnivores - if you make a choice to eat only plants, please don't force it upon others. In other words, you can harm yourself, but don't harm others.
So what "new" science/evidence to you have to support that we should eliminate meat from our diets? And please not something that has been debunked many times over....
March 2, 2013
dirtyWho is forcing anything on you? I'm defending my lifestyle and values that you felt appropriate to attack.
Humans are omnivores in that we can digest both meat and plants. This doesn't speak to which is the optimal nutritional source.
What evidence about how animal based products contributes cardiovascular disease and cancer has ever been debunked? Or how that type of diet is resource intensive and inefficient and a massive contributor to pollution? Do you not think that there is any evidence of merit to support those claims? That all the evidence that these docs, books, and studies have all been effortlessly debunked by the majority of the scientific community? Seriously though... those aren't rhetorical questions. I legitimately am having a hard time understanding how, in the face of all that evidence, a vegan diet can be looked down on.

Nougat_Jesus"Humans are omnivores in that we can digest both meat and plants. This doesn't speak to which is the optimal nutritional source. " << So evolution had nothing to do with this? If humans have canines, they are there for eating arugula?
If your vegan diet is one of choice, I certainly have no issues.
The simplest recommended diet seems to be "Eat plenty of fruits and vegatables, meats in moderation and you'll do fine".
So , what evidence is there that a vegan diet is optimal?
jordanThread of the week! Soon to be featured on Tumblr.

smittykeith, quite frankly, hats off to you for being so patient with someone more interested in insulting you than giving your arguments sober reflection.
