Dagon (2001)

I saw Dagon, from Stuart Gordon (of Re-Animator and Honey I Shrunk the Kids fame). It wasn't bad but it wasn't very good either. There was a lot of running, hiding, then more running, as if the movie was originally half as long and had to be padded out.

Nougat_Jesus The movie's best performance came from Francisco Rabal, an award-winning Spanish actor who apparently fell on some hard times. Incidentally, he died right after filming ended, so this is his last movie. But he was good: even the horror of seeing him with no shirt was alleviated by his great performance. Too bad his accent was so thick. But the movie could've been a lot better, even without a bigger budget. The original story by HP Lovecraft isn't the sort of thing that could be translated diectly to the screen, but this movie seemed just to take the salient points of the story and filled up the rest of the time with padding.

Nougat_Jesus The DVD has a ton of really neat concept art, and I assumed by looking at it that they originally thought they'd have a much bigger budget. The art featured big multi-tentacled creatures, but in the movie the best we saw were people with a tentacles instead of arms or legs. And the art shows that apparently we were supposed to see a naked woman get impregnated by a foot-long, octopoid sperm. (None of these things appeared in the story, by the way.) In the end, I was very disappointed, especially since Gordon had been developing this movie for about fifteen years.
