Synecdoche, New York (2008)

Geez, I usually love the Kauf. He always has these fascinating ideas, but always managed to make them accessible and fun to near-anyone. He really let go of his balloon on this one. Though aside from being confusing and extremely unclear, still kinda neat.

MikkoP It had everything good from other Kaufman movies, it had the same interesting quirk, intriguing dialogue, makes you feel feelings, etc. But it didn't have that "SLAM BAM, THIS IS WHAT THE MOVIE IS ABOUT SO FOCUS ON THIS PARTICULAR IDEA". I'm about to insult the Kauf here based on nothing but my own assumptions but... I think Kaufman thought he was getting a bit too soft, and wanted the audience to really have to work to understand his intentions. Which I don't like because I'm a bit simple, but that's just him making movies for people that aren't me. Which really fucking sucks because I love his movies. Whatever, I hope his next movie is easier to interpret.

  4. MikkoP I avoided saying "pretentious" because that's not what that word means. Pretentious means without any meaning or substance, the movie definitely had substance, and I'm sure Kaufman put a lot into Synecdoche.
