Gone Girl (2014)

Like Fincher's Fight Club, Gone Girl should not be taken at face value. Though it looks and feels like a gritty murder mystery, it's much closer to a comedy than a thriller. It's gloomy and grim, but very funny. It's one deliciously twisted genre-bendre.

  2. ross It's just so absurd, it's impossible to take seriously. And once the mystery is revealed, and it becomes an insane spousal face off, it only gets funnier and funnier. You didn't find their competitiveness entertaining?

  3. doudouce55 Gone Girl is one of those movies (and books) that never should have been made, as its script never would have passed in Bill Harrison's script-writing class. When you open a "door" in a film, it has to be closed. This film (and book) left me with more questions than it gave me answers. Yes, I agree with the spousal face-off, but in reality, the guy should have (and would have) left the b****. Who the heck manipulates people this way?

  5. ross But it's not reality! It's a satire of married life and can't be taken literally. Yeah, no sane person would really stay with with a psychopath, but it's not like Nick's all that level-headed either. Frankly, he's pretty boring and Amy's line at the end about making his life more exciting obviously rings true for him, or else he'd have left immediately.

  6. doudouce55 Alas, there also would not be a movie if his situation would be different. However, the whole thing is preposterous. It's not a question of whether it's reality or not... it's script-writing basic, Ross you're correct when saying it's absurd if taken as a comedy, but it's not tagged as a comedy! It's a thriller. And a bad one at that.

  8. doudouce55 IMDB. But of course it can be both. Very unlike Scream, which is a parody/comedy of horror films. If *only* Gone Girl had succeeded in doing that for thrillers... nope <shaking my head>

  9. ross Haha, I don't think it's a parody of thrillers. It's a comedy *disguised* as a thriller. I doubt we're going to agree on this one, but maybe it takes two watches? I watched it again recently and might have enjoyed it more the second time round. I certainly laughed more.
