Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)

Seriously? What a farce. Worst directing ever (unless it was intentional). We laughed through the entire thing as it was so preposterous, its ending was so predictably dumb and the script, rather pathetic and thin.

  2. doudouce55 No. It's one of those movies where opinions differ. This year's nominations, at least those we've seen so far, has the feel of 1960-1970s films that weren't made back then because the scripts were so bad, but today, everyone is raving about that crap. Crap is crap. No matter how much you want to intellectualize it.

  3. ross I don't know how you can use a term like "preposterous" for such an ordinary premise. What didn't work for you? The Birdman parts? And as far as direction goes, I can't think of another film that so expertly creates the illusion that everything is one continuous cut. It was hypnotizing. (Edit feature coming soon, for real).

  4. jordan Wow! Polarizing movie I suppose, but I very respectfully have to disagree with this score as well. I love this movie to death. Too bad it will lose best picture to Budapest, but at least Keaton will get best actor.

  5. ross Is Budapest really such a lock for Best Picture? I loved that movie, but I'm still surprised by the idea.

  6. doudouce55 The acting was horrendous. How Keaton could win best actor is beyond comprehension. However, Oscar members have a penchant for such roles and films. Everything, scenes, acting, directing, was overdone, hence preposterous (you know, laughable, senseless, comical). At least for us. Sorry you don't agree with the rating, but we disliked this film. I was even asked in fact where I find these terrible movies... My response is that they're nominated, of course. As for Budapest, it's a great movie, beautiful and all. But is it worthy of a Best Pic win? Unsure. In any case, I'm reserving judgment until I see every movie nominated in that category.

  7. dirty I think you can already edit if you click on your own review. I'm in agreement though doucedouce. I don't mean to gang up on you, but I think this is one of the strongest contenders of the year for the performances and the direction. And I sort have felt that Boyhood will be the its biggest foe in the Best Pic category. Boyhood, Birdman, and Budapest I think are in a league of their own this year, although Selma seems to be making some noise, but I haven't seen it.

  8. doudouce55 Yes, found Edit feature, thanks for that. Dirty, I don't feel you're "ganging up on" me, everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion, right? I respect that you, ross, jordan and others have enjoyed Birdman. Glad you feel so strongly about this film. It didn't work for me or anyone in my family. The same thing happened with other films - right now, I can think of two, Amelie and She. Everyone in the film industry and not working in it, was raving about these films. We watched them and didn't like them. Period. We really didn't like this film (Birdman), what can I tell you? If the director wanted his actors to overact, then he got it cuz that's what came across. If not, then it's not working for us... I have yet to see Boyhood and Selma, but I know that's two I'm gonna watch alone (rest of the family has an opinion without even seeing the film, and that, I'm against : to have a real opinion, watch it, you can't judge a book by its cover nor its story, it applies to films too).
