Synopsis:

In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Highly-skilled acting and filmmaking--kind of old-school style, which I like: big scope, big soundtrack, big emotions. Even Brad Pitt, who I guess weaselled a cameo out of his role as producer, doesn't do it any harm.

Where millions read a statistic, we find ourselves companion to the story of one; we taste, hear and feel the rust of the 1840s South and think we can stare it down with our 21st century callous, but presently, there is no wedge between our own implications in this world.

This has to be Chiwetel Ejiofor's best performance. To summarize this would not do the movie justice. It's extremely well done. The only other thing I can say is, if you don't cry at the end, you're not human.

I really can't remember the last time I was so affected by a film. The best movie I've seen this year. It's brutal and shocking - but for me, it was a viewing experience I won't soon forget.
