So, you thought you felt hopelessness before, well "Break out the wolf's head!" How about the Gollem maturing into a solid maniacal villain. So wrapped up in this that even after reading the books I forgot how it was going to end.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

Arwen and the absense of the Scouring of the Shire aside, this film delivered as the ever-loving lulu of all climax battles/resolutions/etc. Some hate "multiple endings." I don't mind that as much as omit of little details of backstory from earlier books/films ie Tom Bombadil.
