Django Unchained (2012)
If Tarantino's brash style fits well with any theme, it's the oppression of men by other men. The brutality is so nonchalant, you have to remind yourself people really did this shit to each other. Slow build-up really made the retribution cathartic. Lynch mob scene was classic.

The Road (2009)
The Apocalypse is not pretty. You need to be in the right mood, but this one was stark, brutal, sincere, and touching.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
I had fun with this. The introduction was awkward and somewhat bizarre, but you begin to appreciate that this is not only intentional, but the whole point. Nails home the idea that intelligence, love, and mental health are not necessarily mutually exclusive things.

Skyfall (2012)
This started out as the best Bond ever; a nice infusion of Bourne without sacrificing too much of the glamour and cheese that makes Bond great. I just don't understand why they let Stallone write the ending?

The American (2010)
Clooney at his best. The plot is slow and nuanced, juxtaposing the quiet, introspective protagonist with the simultaneously intriguing and abhorrent existence of the world-class assassin. The breathtaking setting makes it all the more surreal.

Children of Men (2006)
An apocalyptic film that actually feels real. Frighteningly real. Superb performances by everyone involved. The drama and suspense builds throughout and the final catharsis is visceral. Yes I liked it.

The Bourne Legacy (2012)
At the end I was genuinely surprised. The plot unfolded so gradually and took second fiddle to the action (which lives up to the Bourne legacy). I don't exactly dislike this, but the movie is definitely not stand-alone, and it's difficult to judge without the sequels.

Lost in Translation (2003)
Why do I love this? I have a pretty low tolerance for love stories, and would never publicly admit to crying because of a film. But this story and its portrayal is so plain and simple and just plain and simply good. No apologies.

Memento (2000)
This is one of those exceedingly rare films that has you ranting enthusiastically at anyone who will listen: "and they way they did that transition!?!" Definitely one of my all-time favourites.

Cloud Atlas (2012)
This movie is about people. Six separate stories which are hurled at you seemingly at random, but the threads of tone, pace, and emotion are woven masterfully together. It is thematically rich but never preachy. Phenomenal.
