What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
Probably the best vampire story out of the last 10 years. Not hilarious but super clever.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
Darker than your average Star Wars story but had some fun space adventures with high stakes. Still sad about the post-trailer edits though.

The Eagle Huntress (2016)
Women doing traditionally male things and giant birds of prey. This is basically the perfect combination of things for me.

Queen of Katwe (2016)
This was really cute. And a nice change of pace from summer blockbusters. Some poor editing done in the first 10-15 minutes, but it improves!

Young Frankenstein (1974)
This was one of my favourite early comedies but having just re-watched it I realize it falls apart after the famous musical number and has a fairly lack luster ending.

Blade Runner (1982)
I was really enjoying this movie until the MC became a rapist. Would have been cool to have a female character who wasn't a robot too.
Apart from that there was a lot going on but very little being explained. Lots of potential story that doesn't really go anywhere.

Ghostbusters (2016)
I wasn't expecting a lot from this movie but I wanted to support it and was then pleasantly surprised at how funny it was. Not hilarious but as good as any other summer comedy out there.

Room 237 (2012)
Watched this right after watching The Shining. It's basically something I'd expect from some random guy with a YouTube channel and 5 followers.

The Shining (1980)
26 years late to the party, but found this surprisingly "enjoyable" as much as a horror story can be enjoyable. Some great artistic shots. Really expected more type writer though.

Ex Machina (2015)
Unpopular opinion: I was really excited to watch this moving but it only managed to live up to my expectation in regards to styling.
The approach to AI wasn't anything new or refreshing (which is what I had wanted) and the ending was exactly what I don't like in AI stories.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015)
It had it's fun parts, some great contrasts, but overall it wasn't anything special. If you enjoy retro-fun spy films you can get a kick out of it.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 (2015)
It was a... conclusion. Couldn't translate the emotional impact or terror that the books could, but managed to do a good job of showing an scary oppressive government. Overall a solid ending for the series.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
Good for being what it is, managed to not disappoint, general fun in space, met expectations. Couldn't really ask for more!

The Martian (2015)
Kept having to remind myself that this wasn`t based on a true story.
October 11, 2015
Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)
Wasn`t expecting such a high level of absurdity. Nor the sausage fest. Fun to see Colin Firth as an action star but feeling mislead by the internet, which made this movie a little harder to enjoy.

Black Mass (2015)
Some stuff was really great: casting, acting, design. But why I'm giving a not great score is because of the ending and the pacing. Couldn't feel a conclusion approaching and the past/present jumps were wasted and made unnecessary.
Wont re-watch but enjoyed watching.

Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger (2014)
Nothing special about the documentary style or execution but a piece of history that seems much further in the past than it is.

The Scandalous Lady W (2015)
Watched for Natalie Dormer, stayed for the beautiful outfits and well executed plot based on real history.
It did jump around (past/present) more than I thought was necessary though.

American Ultra (2015)
This movie had a fun premise and cast but really could have used an amazing soundtrack and a few more quirks to make it into something with real impact.

Ant-Man (2015)
Went in with low expectations but came out pleasantly surprised. Excellent job playing with scope and size, especially during the fight scenes. Great amount of humour and fun. But man, Marvel needs to learn that there's more than one plot line option for female characters.

Black Book (2006)
Overall this was pretty good but got kind of unnecessarily convoluted towards the end which really wasn't needed as the movie had a lot going on already.
August 30, 2015
Terminator Genisys (2015)
Fine? I'm not much of a Terminator fan to begin with, there was a lot here that was kind of painful but fine for a summer blockbuster and reboot.
August 30, 2015
Jurassic World (2015)
Pretty disappointed in the plot and acting and pacing and writing. But the dinosaurs looked great.
August 30, 2015
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Easily the best movie I've seen in theatres in years. Fast paced from start to finish with amazing editing, atmosphere, and utter chaos.
August 30, 2015
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Boredom and eye rolling. Followed with some cringing.
August 30, 2015
The Riot Club (2014)
I kind of regret watching this one.
The acting was good, everything looked nice, but I can't get past the messed up story. The message was to not trust rich white men, right? Still don't know why the two MCs hated each other either.
And the story is given away in the trailer.

Camp X-Ray (2014)
Emotional and topical drama that I'd love to see promoted more. While a bigger picture view of the terrible things happening in Guantanamo could make for a weightier film, the personal story makes for easier consumption. Peyman Moaadi easily steals the show.
January 16, 2015
X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
Can we stop having story lines that contribute almost nothing to the general canon universe? The plot is weak in this one, making it feel like a random throw away movie. Felt like everyone's preformance was wasted.
January 10, 2015
The Imitation Game (2014)
While burdened with a few unnecessarily over dramatic scenes and a slightly awkward present/past mixed story the movie is still very well done and definitely something I'd recommend.
January 6, 2015
The Giver (2014)
Not a failed book to movie adaptation but there is something terribly awkward about both the acting and the way this movie was shot. Probably one of those stories that should have just remained a classic in it's original form.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (2014)
Great mesh between the propaganda and horrors of war times while still holding onto that Hunger Games visual flare.
They're doing a good job of building up to the conclusion but it's a shame that it's been cut in half.
